TECHNIQUES FOR VEHICLE DETECTION: AN OVERVIEW OF CURRENT TECHNOLOGY (WITH BIBLIOGRAPHY)

The report contains the results of work carried out under P374 "Techniques for Vehicle Detection" and is intended as an introduction to vehicle detection techniques and also as a guide to sources of information. The report presents an overview of vehicle detection techniques and current technology. A number of conclusions are drawn concerning future development of detection methods and also for further work to be carried out. It is suggested that triboelectric cables will replace pneumatic tubes at temporary installations while permanent detectors will largely be based on sensing magnetic fields, as with fluxgate magnetometers and conventional inductive loops.
