TECHNIQUES FOR VEHICLE DETECTION: A FEASIBILITY STUDY OF LOW COST LOAD SENSITIVE VEHICLE DETECTORS

The report presents the results of earlier work carried out under Research Report P374 "Techniques for Vehicle Detection" and discusses the feasibility of using optical fibre interferometers, triboelectric cable sensors and piezoelectric cable sensors as the basis of a low-cost, load-sensitive, vehicle detection system. It suggests that optical fibre interferometers offer a feasible method for vehicle detection especially where electromagnetic noise levels are high, or where the detection zone has an unusual shape. Their role as load sensors is however considered less certain. Triboelectric sensors offer more promise in their area although more work is required, while piezoelectric sensors offer the most promise of the techniques considered. Details of experiments are given and recommendations made for further research. (TRRL)
