RESIDUALS ARE NO REFUSE (ANYMORE): RECYCLING OF ASPHALT

RESTEN ZIJN GEEN AFVAL (MEER): HERGEBRUIK ASFALT

This report describes the current state of technology with regard to the recycling of asphalt and presents an overview of the gathered knowledge. The CROW working group pays attention to the manner in which old asphalt is obtained in the Netherlands and to the type and quantity of the pretreatment that is required before this old material can be used as 'asphaltic aggregate' in asphalt production. Cold production methods for the recycling are described, with special emphasis on crushed asphalt cement. Various warm production methods, mix-in-place as well as mix-in-plant methods with stationary processing plants (commonly used in the Netherlands), are mentioned. Proposals are made for more detailed specifications for the regeneration of asphalt and some special aspects such as 'second-generation-recycling', and the application of higher percentages of asphaltic aggregate, are discussed.
