LOW-SPEED STREETS

HIDASKADUT

The study is a part of a project, the purpose of which is to promote the implementation of special street environments connected to the urban traffic reform, such as low-speed streets, woonerfs, and pedestrian streets. The first part of the report describes the planning goals of low-speed streets, their functional and qualitative requirements, and their areas of application. The report also reviews their use abroad. The main part of the report presents the different speed lowering constructions to be used on low-speed streets. Especially humps, elevated pedestrian crossings, the horizontal transition of the carriageway, and the narrowings of the carriageway. Directives for the signing and marking of low-speed streets are given. The maintenance and cleaning of low-speed streets are also discussed along with the construction costs. (TRRL)
