The study is based on traffic accident records of insurance companies and cases collected by investigation teams. In the 80's the annual number of accidents was about 2000, of which the moped rider was a guilty part in 83% of the accidents. In the year 1986 30 moped riders or their passenger died and 710 injured. The proportion of accidents, where mopedists or passenger died or injured have reduced to one half of what it was in the year 1973. Two thirds of the accidents involved drivers younger than 20 years. Almost 40% of the moped drivers had bought the moped in the accident year or the year before. Accidents happen usually at summer time in good weather conditions. They are usually caused by unexpected action by the rider. This is usually a consequence of misjudgement or observational error. For younger people reasons for these errors are usually inexperience, wrong attitudes and risk takimg and for older people limitations in ability to observe and make judgements. (TRRL)
