PROBLEM DRIVERS. PART I. DRUNKEN DRIVERS AS PROBLEM DRIVERS

ONGELMAKULJETTAJAT. OSA I. RATTIJUOPOT ONGELMAKULJETTAJINA

This literature study discusses drunken drivers as problem drivers. Alcohol problems are common among drunken drivers, as many as 30% of the drunken drivers caught in Finland suffer from alcohol problem. The major group among drunken drivers are men about 35 to 45 years old. Drunken driving offences often result from factors causing social alienation, such as unemployment, divorces and other personal problems. The most common countermeasure against drunken driving is revoking the driver's licence. It has proved an efficient preventive measure. Evaluation studies on the success of education and treatment projects involve many methodological problems. Studies indicate that such programmes have in many cases had a favourable effect on attitudes and the level of knowledge. Yet, according to some well-controlled and extensive experimental studies, education and treatment programmes have shown only slight success in improving the subsequent driving behaviour of drunken drivers. Although there are problems in such programmes, they are useful in creating a practice that makes it possible to offer aid to drivers repeatedly guilty of drunken driving and suffering from alcohol problems.
