HERBICIDE PROGRAM, SKILL AID MISSOURI MAINTENANCE. ROADSIDE MANAGEMENT '90
Missouri's innovative management program which includes reduced mowing, herbicides and planting is described. The program, which has saved $2 million a year, has reduced accidents, improved turf quality, improved mowing efficiency and encouraged natural revegetation. Herbicide use has tripled in the last 3 years. About 300 employees are trained in the safe use of pesticides at the University of Missouri each year, and an in-house program is presented to field personnel. 'Adopt-a-highway' program has been a successful public awareness and involvement program. Inmate labor has also helped improve the roadside maintenance program. Four special landscape crews give higher concentration of roadside maintenance in highly developed areas.
