FAST SURVEY FOR PAVEMENTS
The revolutionary High Speed Road Monitor developed in the United Kingdom to gauge road conditions without stopping traffic is described. Developed by the Transport & Road Research Laboratory, it comprises a long, low trailer coupled to a towing vehicle. The trailer is fitted with 6 laser sensors used to measure and analyze longitudinal road profiles, wheel track rutting, surface texture and road alignment. Inclinometers and distance transducers log gradients, crossfalls and curvature radii. The HSRM can make all these measurements simultaneously and without stopping. All data is recorded on magnetic cartridges in the towing vehicle which also carries HSRM's controls, power pack and a small computer. Details of its use are briefly summarized.
