CHICAGO'S LOOP: A NEW APPROACH

The reconstruction is described of the Wells Street Viaduct wich cleaned up a dangerous area just north of Chicago's central business district by providing a structurally sound approach for trains and a column-free street below. The 4 major objectives of the project were as follows: replace or rehabilitate more than 650 ft of track support structure eliminate the support columns in the roadway; increase vertical clearance of the roadway and the railroad tracks; maintain CTA (Chicago Transit Authority) railway service except for limited weekend closures; the new structure was built outside of the existing one, which thus could remain operational while the new foundations were being built. The details of the construction are described.
