VEHICLE-ROAD INTERACTION

This article reports on a joint road-transport forum organised in London by the Institute of Road Transport Engineers and the Institution of Highways and Transportation Engineers. The forum represented a beginning for the exchange of information between transport and highway engineers. Discussion ranged from road maintenance and its impact on safety, vehicle maintenance costs and fuel consumption, to fleet maintenance and its impact on safety for other road users. Also discussed were anti-spray devices, disintegrated tyre rubber on roadsides, compressed air systems, electronics reliability, on-board condition monitoring, and dynamic road-loading coefficients of different types of bogie and suspension systems.
