HOT BOX BRINGS ALL-DAY QUALITY TO SMALL BLACKTOP REPAIRS

This article describes the Hot Box as a means of containing, transporting and dispensing standard specification asphalts and macadams while maintaining the materials at their correct laying temperatures. The Hot Box enables a highway authority to improve the productivity of its patching gang, eliminate wasted material and ensure a good quality repair based on conventional methods and proven materials. A steep sided, insulated container, the Hot Box can be mechanically or hydraulically mounted on a suitable capacity vehicle or it can be sited permanently. Materials are dispensed through a pivoted chute directly into the repair, minimising heavy shovelling. The design features and performance of two Danish and two UK models are presented.
