GUIDELINES FOR USE OF WEATHERING STEEL IN BRIDGES
The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) has issued a Technical Advisory to provide engineers with guidelines for the proper application of unpainted weathering-grade steels in bridges and other highway structures. These steels are currently supplied under AASHTO Specification M270 (ASTM A709) with grades 50, 70, and 100 available. Where weathering steel with enhanced atmospheric corrosion resistance is desired, the letter "W" follows the grade. This article provides a discussion of some of the guidelines as they relate to environmental/climatic factors, location and geometrics, bridge design details, and maintenance.
