THE TBM: HOW SIMPLE SHOULD IT BE?
Tunnel boring machines (TBM) which were once viewed as incapable of handling variable ground conditions came under scrutiny at the 1989-90 session of the British Tunnelling Society held on September 21, 1989. Improvements to these machines has led to a renewed interest in their use and consideration of which type of machine would be best suited to handle various jobs. Various types of TBMs are reviewed as they were applied to sound rock, loose ground and variable ground.
