HIGHWAY IN THE SKY SINKS OUT OF SIGHT
A 3900 ft (1.2km)-long, four-lane immersed tube road tunnel across the Boston Harbour will be the first phase of a comprehensive restructuring of the highway system through Boston. The second phase involves a complex construction programme which will replace the existing Central Artery viaduct with an underground highway directly beneath. The project is estimated to cost a total of $US4400 million at 1987 prices and construction is expected to be at its most concentrated between 1992 and 1996.
