DAMAGE LIMITATION
At best street lighting maintenance is an affordable compromise between the ideal and a damage limitation exercise. While renewal of obsolete lighting stock is the obvious answer, it is likely to be the long term solution. In the meantime, considerable improvements are possible by adopting better management and cost effective techniques. Parameters should be established to identify tolerable depreciation levels which then determine service intervals. This article discusses lamp replacement intervals, cleaning and servicing, the need for an efficient and workable record system, and the benefits of maintenance on a competitive basis.
