TUNNEL TALK
This is a brief history of tunneling which describes, in addition to the new Austrian tunneling method (NATM), five other techniques. In the very old tunneling method (VOTM), the face was advanced by chiselling or by dousing hot rock with water. The early American tunneling method (EATM) which was developed at the Hoosac Tunnel in western Massachusetts introduced the drill-load-blast-muck cycle of excavation. The American steel support method (ASSM) is now invalid. The old Austrian tunneling method (OATM), the tunnel boring tunneling method (TBTM) a north American method, and the new Austrian tunneling method are the other methods. Details of these methods are briefly described.
