The expansion of the Fairway program has resulted in the need for a tram lane device which deters motorists from crossing into the areas reserved for trams while still allowing the safe passage of a wide range of vehicles should they be forced to cross the devices in emergency or because of an obstruction. This report describes the examination of in-service effectiveness of devices which have previously been identified as suitable for on-road trials. The first tram lane treatment, a solid yellow line augmented by pairs of raised pavement markers, is shown to provide adequate separation between trams and other traffic which is carrying out through-manoeuvers. While improving behavior at some turn sites examined, this treatment did not control certain irregular turns across the tram lane and there was considerable continued illegal turning behavior and tram delay at several confined intersections. The introduction of a truncated pyramid bar to replace the RRPMs resulted in no significant improvement in the behavior of drivers nor to the delay experienced by trams.
