ALCOHOL AND SAFETY BELT EDUCATION PROGRAM. FINAL REPORT
The purpose of this project was to support NHTSA's two major programs: Alcohol and Driving and increasing Safety Belt/Child Passenger Safety Seat Usage through educational programs, workshops, media campaigns, and numerous other organized activities to gain public support mainly through existing women's organizations. The National Association of Women Highway Safety Leaders (NAWHSL) carried out numerous activities to accomplish this objective. The principal elements of this endeavor were as follows: conducted joint regional meetings with NHTSA regional personnel, Governor's Highway Safety Representatives and others involved in highway safety programs to establish a cooperative effort in program planning; evaluated the internal structure of NAWHSL and implemented certain changes such as new appointments of state representatives; compiled lists of women's organizations which could be contacted to encourage them to adopt programs on safety belts and alcohol for their membership; and established speaker's bureaus, implemented incentive programs, and developed and produced pamphlets, news articles, newsletters, public service announcements, films, etc., to be used with the state and community projects. The specific accomplishments were significant. The projects reported in this volume involved over 5,000 volunteers and reached approximately 8 million members of their respective communities.
