OBSERVATIONAL STUDY OF BICYCLE HELMET WEARING AMONG SOUTH AUSTRALIAN SCHOOL CHILDREN

This report presents the findings of a study undertaken to determine the patterns of bicycle helmet use amongst school children in South Australia. The study was designed to provide benchmark rates of helmet use for the evaluation of future promotional campaigns involving the road safety division. The results indicate that: children in urban areas are more likely to wear a helmet when riding to and from school than children in rural areas. Children attending non government schools are more likely to wear helmets when riding to and from school than children attending government schools. Children attending primary schools are more likely to wear helmets when riding to and from school than children attending secondary schools. In urban areas, children attending schools in high socioeconomic areas are more likely to wear helmets when riding to and from school than children attending schools in low socioeconomic areas. In rural areas, there is not a statistically significant difference at the 5 per cent level in the use of bicycle helmets by students in areas categorised as low and high socioeconomic status. There is not a statistically significant difference at the 5 per cent level in the use of bicycle helmets by students on the basis of sex. (TRRL)
