TRENDS IN HELMET USAGE RATES AND BICYLCIST NUMBERS SUSTAINING HEAD INJURY - JULY 1981 TO DECEMBER 1985 - VICTORIA

About 30 bicycle riders are killed and 1200 injured each year on Victorian roads. Head injuries are the cause of about 80% of cyclist fatalities and constitute 35% of reported injuries. Since 1980 helmet wearing promotion campaigns have resulted in substantial increases in bicycle helmet wearing rates. These increases have been accompanied by an encouraging decrease in the number of bicyclists killed or admitted to hospital with head injuries. This report describes these trends.
