A REVIEW OF TRAINING FOR THE HEAVY VEHICLE DRIVER - IMPLICATIONS FOR ROAD SAFETY

The purpose of the review was to establish whether there are road safety benefits associated with heavy vehicle driver training. There are a number of publications containing curriculum for driver training for drivers generally and, specifically, for heavy vehicle drivers. However, empirical evidence pertaining to safety impact is scarce. Most training programs are neither empirically evaluated nor clearly conceptualized, making it difficult to assess their validity or to identify useful programs. The review identifies the various difficulties associated with assessing the effectiveness of heavy vehicle driver training programs in terms of road safety benefits. In view of the current lack of evidence associating driver education and training with safety related benefits, it could be argued that such measures require a great deal of expenditure which might be more profitably spent on long term research to develop effective measures. The evidence presented does suggest that the face validity of the content of a course is no assurance of success. Research is needed to determine what behaviour is central to the road safety context and how to influence, modify or change behaviour in the real driving situation.
