INVESTMENT IN TRANSPORT INFRASTRUCTURE IN ECMT COUNTRIES

This report presents the results of a survey on the investment in transport infrastructure in ECMT (European Conference of Ministers of Transport) countries from 1975 to 1984. Data on investment expenditure, capital values, and maintenance expenditure are provided for each of the various transport sectors (roads, railways, suburban railways and metros, inland waterways, pipelines, ports and airports). The comprehensiveness of the data provided varies considerably between countries. In order to provide a common basis for the data compiled, they have been converted into the European currency unit. The report discusses the following topics: a) traffic growth and the economic background; c) trends in investment; c) breakdown of investment among modes of transport; d) concern about insufficient capital; and e) the need for proper maintenance. National reports and tables setting out the data collected for each country are provided in the annexes. The countries covered are: Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Greece, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Turkey, United Kingdom, and Yugoslavia.
