BACKGROUNDS OF BELT USE BY CAR DRIVERS. RESULTS OF A QUESTIONNAIRE IN THE PROVINCE OF SOUTH-HOLLAND

ACHTERGRONDEN VAN GORDELGEBRUIK BIJ AUTOMOBILISTEN. RESULTATEN VAN EEN SCHRIFTELIJK VRAGENLIJSTONDERZOEK BIJ AUTOMOBILISTEN IN ZUID-HOLLAND

A survey was held in the province of south-holland into the use of safety belts. The interview was undertaken to study the demographic, situational and psychological factors which influence the use of safety-belts (see also IRRD 820537). Questionnaires were sent to 1200 persons having a driving licence, divided into 4 age groups: 18-20, 21-24, 25-34, and 34 and older. Results from the returned questionnaires (52.09%) lead to the following recommendations: (1) the use of safety belts must be promoted by male drivers between 21-24 years old with a modest education and income, and who are recently qualified drivers; drive 20000 or more kilometres per year and drive old, big cars; (2) publicity campaigns should be directed locally and close to the citizen, the message should be loud and clear. Radio and television should be used to provide information; (3) both the government and industry can stimulate improvements in belt design; and (4) for the improvement of seat belt use it is useful to have regular law enforcement action by police in order to motivate drivers to modify their attitude to the use of safety-belts. Special attention should be given to week-end nights in urban areas. (TRRL)
