THE WEAR RESISTANCE OF MINERAL AGGREGATES FOR PAVEMENTS AND THE METHODS FOR TESTING IT

Both sudden stud impacts and stud scrapes are affecting the stone grains in the pavement due to the wear caused by studded tyre traffic. The most stud wear resistant aggregates are such whole, unweathering, unoriented, fine aggregates, which contain in addition to hard minerals a small amount of soft or tough minerals evenly distributed to increase the elasticity of the aggregate. The strength and wear resistance of various mineral aggregates are studied. A model was developed predicting the wear resistance of the mineral aggregate on the basis of its grain size and point load index. (TRRL)
