THE NAVIGATION AND COMMAND AND CONTROL ASPECTS OF THE MOBILE INFORMATION SYSTEMS (MIS) ALVEY DEMONSTRATOR PROJECT. NAV 85 - LAND NAVIGATION AND LOCATION FOR MOBILE APPLICATIONS - PAPERS PRESENTED AT THE 1985 CONFERENCE OF THE ROYAL INSTITUTE OF NAVIGATION, YORK, 9-11 SEPTEMBER 1985

A description is given of a mobile information system (mis) submittted by racal research to the alvey directorate, a government sponsored organisation to help advance information technology. The proposed system brings travel information to a mobile user on the racal vodafone cellular radio infrastructure, or similar, and has the interest of a large consortium. The drawbacks of transmitting bulletins on standard radio broadcasts are noted and merits of the bbc carfax single frequency system are discussed. Cellular radio however could provide collated information broadcast from an appropriate area transmitter. The main features of the proposed mis are outlined and hopes of setting up a pilot system expressed. The potential benefits of a route guidance system are discussed. A central computer containing up to date information on routes and conditions for the whole UK would be called up by a driver who would receive full details of how best to achieve his desired journey. The idea of providing route guidance systems with vehicle location by using low frequency radio transmission or a radio phone is put forward and the use of an electronic display unit showing area and vehicle position is suggested.
