EMERGING TECHNOLOGIES FOR CONTROLLING THE DRUNK DRIVER. SOCIAL CONTROL OF THE DRINKING DRIVER
This chapter describes technological devices and procedures applied to the drinking problem. The speed with which devices are used will depend upon the public demand for them. There is no indication that the public will purchase personal breath testers, sober pills, or automobile interlocks. Most of the technology in the area of drinking driving has been in enforcement or corrections (sobriety checkpoints, radar speed traps). The value of these, however, is unknown. If low-alcohol beverages, sober pills or BAC information reduce incidence of alcoholism, or alcohol problems generally, then, these will be implemented irrespective of their highway safety benefits.
