RECENT FRENCH STUDIES ON CAPACITY AND WAITING TIMES AT RURAL UNSIGNALIZED INTERSECTIONS. INTERSECTIONS WITHOUT TRAFFIC SIGNALS, PROCEEDINGS OF AN INTERNATIONAL WORKSHOP, 16-18 MARCH 1988, BOCHUM, WEST GERMANY

This paper summarises the results of several recent French studies of capacity and delays at unsignalised intersections, which aim to provide traffic engineers with some aids to intersection design. It begins by outlining the research, which started from an extensive comparison of the possible approaches that can be grouped into statistical predictions based on measurements, the use of stochastic models of road traffic, and simulation studies. The paper shows how a capacity formula for roads entering rural roundabouts was derived from traffic measurements. It describes the structure and algorithm of the octave microcomputer simulation program, which was developed in France, and outlines some examples of its application. Finally, some conclusions and indications of future developments are presented: (1) the present version of octave is being increasingly used, confirming that French traffic engineers really need it; (2) improvements planned for octave include the possiblity of representing four-arm intersections regulated with priority to the introduction of non-stationary traffic flows, the calculation of capacity in all cases, and an estimation of conflicts; (3) further work remains to be done on roundabouts, the entry capacity formula, and the delay estimation method; (4) octave needs to be adapted to urban traffic conditions.
