APPLICATION OF FIELD MODEL TO TUNNEL FIRE SERVICES DESIGN ---PAPERS PRESENTED AT THE 6TH INTERNATIONAL SYMPOSIUM ON THE AERODYNAMICS AND VENTILATION OF VEHICLE TUNNELS, DURHAM, 27-29 SEPT 1988
This article illustrates how the technique of field modelling can be applied to evaluate the fire design of a tunnel. A three-dimensional simulation is performed to study the aerodynamic and smoke movement. The information of the fire-induced convective flow, temperature and smoke field achieved gives a rough estimate on the fire environment inside the tunnel at the preflashover stage. This can be used to assess the critical air velocity of a longitudinal ventilation system required in controlling 'back-layering' as well as the effectiveness of the smoke extraction system installed. Since about sixty thousand equations are solved, the computer packages developed have to be executed on a super-minicomputer. But it can be executed on smaller computer systems at the supermicro- (such as IBM80386) or mini-(such as vax/780) levels if only two-dimensional simulation is required.(a)
