NAVIGATION AND COMMUNICATIONS FOR ALL TRANSPORTATION MODES ---PROCEEDINGS OF THE 23RD ANNUAL MEETING OF THE CANADIAN TRANSPORTATION RESEARCH FORUM, MINAKI LODGE, ONTARIO, CANADA, 24-27 MAY 1988

The Canadian radio navigation plan (crnp) is a project currently underway through the sponsorship of the transportation development centre in Montreal. The primary aim of the crnp is to propose a multi-modal navigation and communication system that will make the most efficient use of current technology while recognizing the limited frequency spectrum available. This paper summarizes navigation and communication systems that have been investigated by the Ontario Ministry of Transportation for the air and surface modes, focusing on the wide angle vehicle monitoring (wavm) system. Wavm will utilize the communications infrastructure provided by mobile satellites and vehicle positioning capabilities of either navigation satellites (such as the global positioning system) or land based navigation systems (loran-c). The system will be able to provide real time truck location and identification information, as well as two-way communication services between the equipped trucks and the trucking company's base station. For the covering abstract of the conference see IRRD 807127.
