MODELISATION AND DESIGN OF GEOTEXTILES SUBMITTED TO PUNCTURE LOADING ---PROCEEDINGS OF THE INTERNATIONAL SYMPOSIUM ON THEORY AND PRACTICE OF EARTH REINFORCEMENT, FUKUOKA, KYUSHU, JAPAN, 5-7 OCTOBER 1988

This paper evaluates the relevant stress situations for geotextiles by means of puncture analysis of the mechanical properties of continuous filament needle punched polypropylene nonwoven geotextiles. A modified California bearing ratio (CBR) test was used to take the subsoil into account when determining the puncture strength of the geotextile. A cylinder 200 mm high was filled with soil and the piston, 50 mm in diameter, was pushed through the geotextile until failure occurred. The force-elongation curve was recorded. Hesbayan silt was used as the subsoil. Soil bearing capacity was decreased by increasing the soil water content. Tensile tests were also performed. Analysis of the results showed that the presence of soil beneath the geotextile can increase geotextile puncture strength by as much as 27%. The test was more realistic than the CBR test. The rupture criteria seemed to depend only on the strain at breaking point and in a direction perpendicular to the direction of that strain.
