CLAY GEOTEXTILE INTERACTION IN IN-SOIL TENSILE TESTS ---PROCEEDINGS OF THE INTERNATIONAL SYMPOSIUM ON THEORY AND PRACTICE OF EARTH REINFORCEMENT, FUKUOKA, KYUSHU, JAPAN, 5-7 OCTOBER 1988
Large scale pull out tests were conducted on both woven and non woven needle punched polypropylene geotextiles in silty clay, in order to ascertain the effects of soil confinement upon the geotextile modulus at low strains (maximum 10%). The factors governing the clay geotextile interaction were also determined. A large steel box which allowed no relative lateral displacement between the soil layers on the two sides of the geotextile. The vertical load was applied from a load frame using an hydraulic ram and the load was distributed over the soil by a rigid steel plate. Tests were conducted at 15, 50 and 100 kpa normal stresses. Lateral tensile force was applied at a rate of 300 n/minute. Tests were terminated at failure of the geotextile, or at bond failure, or at 4.2 kn, whichever was reached first. It was found that the geotextile modulus was greatly increased by confinement, and that this increase was inversely proportional to the geotextile strain. The increase in geotextile modulus of the non woven geotextile was considerably larger than that of the woven geotextile. For the covering abstract of the symposium see IRRD 818063.
