MODIFICATIONS STRUCTURELLES ET FONCTIONNELLES DES OUVRAGES D'ART

When widening motorway bridges, the designer has to choose between two alternatives, the economic aspects of which are very important. The first alternative consists in reconstructing the bridges which can cost a great deal, due to demolition and safety measures for maintaining traffic: these costs can be three times the cost of construction of an ordinary standard motorway bridge. In the second alternative, the designer has to evaluate the serviceability of the existing structure to be modified, which implies a special approach with specific techniques. Two examples are given as an illustration of the problems and methods: (1) the bridge over La vareze river, a precast prestressed beam deck, which needed renovating due to possible corrosion of the tendons, caused by poor grouting. The work carried out consisted of static load tests, permanent acoustic monitoring and monitoring of the deflections of the structure in service with inductive extensometers which enabled the corrosion risks to be assessed and the type of rehabilitation to be chosen. (2) overpass n deg 51 on a13 motorway, a one-span bridge of a special concrete and steel mixed structure called "robinson slab", whose bearings were replaced by cantilevers and whose serviceability after modification was evaluated by static load tests, strain gauges and weighing operations, thus enabling special truck trains to pass over the bridge. The general methodology consists in: -conducting a detailed analysis of the safety level of the structure by auscultation and special measurements; -making a detailed calculation of the structure to be confirmed by static load tests; -combining acceptable risks and economic advantages in the comparison of alternatives.
