THE BEHAVIOUR AND MECHANISTIC DESIGN OF ASPHALT PAVEMENTS. SIXTH INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE, STRUCTURAL DESIGN OF ASPHALT PAVEMENTS, VOLUME I, PROCEEDINGS, UNIVERSITY OF MICHIGAN, JULY 13-17, 1987, ANN ARBOR, MICHIGAN

The mechanistic method of the design of asphalt pavements, as reported to the last Conference, has received a wide degree of acceptance by road authorities in South Africa. Additional work has enabled the application of the principles embodied in the method to lead to the development of more effective rehabilitation methods. This paper describes the importance of understanding the behaviour of asphalt pavements, with the emphasis on its state of distress. The importance of the type of support under the asphalt layer is emphasized, whether this be granular or cemented layers. Typical moduli for these layers in the distressed state is given for use in mechanistic rehabilitation methods. A variety of distress mechanisms is also discussed. The present state of the pavement can ge assessed more accurately and rehabilitation strategies better selected by using the methods and information discussed.
