DETAILS OF AN EXPERT SYSTEM FOR EARTHMOVING EQUIPMENT SELECTION
One of the critical management tasks faced by the construction management team today is to improve construction productivity, by reducing construction costs without sacrificing quality, aesthetics or increasing maintenance costs. Expert systems using artificial intelligence can be used as tools at different phases on construction projects to improve productivity, even if only as micro-computer based decision support systems. This paper gives a brief explanation of expert systems and their development in construction and civil engineering and describes the development of an expert system for selecting the most economical combination of machines for an earthmoving project.
