DRIVE SAFELY IN THE DARK
The National Safety Council has prepared guidelines for safe driving at night. These include preparing your vehicle for night driving by making certain that windows, headlights, taillights, and signal lights are kept clean and in good working order; never driving at night with sunglasses on; making sure you allow your eyes to adjust to the change from bright lights to darkness for at least two minutes prior to driving off; do not drink and drive; when in doubt as to whether you should turn on your headlights, turn them on; reduce your speed and increase your following distance as night driving makes distance perception more difficult to judge; and do not drive too closely beside other vehicles. Guidelines are also given concerning animals either approaching or in the roadway, and oncoming vehicle light levels (high or low beam).
