VIA GETS THE AXE
Detailed is the second cut of rail service in Canada to occur in a single decade. The Minister of Transport announced in October 1989 that passenger service provided by VIA Rail would be reduced as of January 15, 1990. VIA Rail's passenger service will be reduced to three-days-a-week in most areas outside of Quebec-Windsor. The Quebec-Windsor area will continue to offer daily service while the bus companies will try to pick up the slack. The cuts to VIA Rail service will eliminate not only routes and trains, but thousands of jobs as well.
