GUIDELINES FOR FLEXURAL DESIGN OF PRESTRESSED COMPOSITE BEAMS

Guidelines and equations are presented for the flexural design of prestressed composite beams for the following cases: (1) in the positive moment region, the steel beam is prestressed before the concrete deck is cast, and (2) in the negative moment region, the steel beam is prestressed and then compositely connected to a precast, prestressed concrete deck. The guidelines and equations can be used to design lighter, more economical composite sections. These equations can be used for the design of new structuures and for upgrading existing structures. The equations are presented in a manner suitable for easy use by bridge engineers.
