"RUBBLIZING" DEBUTS IN WEST VIRGINIA

Ten different portland cement concrete rehabilitation methods were examined to determine the most economical way, taking into account estimated cost and service, to rehabilitate a stretch of I-77, the West Virginia Parkway. The method recommended was rubblizing the pavement and overlaying about 17 miles of two-lane section, both north and southbound, with a 10-in. large stone Hot-Mix Asphalt overlay (about 180,000 tons). In rubblizing, the concrete surface is reduced by impact into granular form to provide a suitable base for the overlay. This article provides details of the project, which included keeping one lane open for traffic in both directions during the entire construction process.
