HELIPORT DEVELOPED AS AN ALTERNATIVE TRANSPORTATION CENTER
The technology of helicopters has improved to the point where they now provide a viable transportation alternative to reduce travel time to and from airports. To further increase the viability of helicopter-commuting, full-service facilities must be established within those commercial centers where the demand exists. These facilities, known as heliports, have been successfully demonstrated through the Federal Aviation Administration's National Prototype Demonstration Heliport Program as part of its Rotorcraft Master Plan. This article discusses the development of a heliport in Garland, Texas, from its first proposal in 1983 through its project bid late in 1988. Included in the discussion is information on the feasibility study for the proposed heliport, funding, site selection, and expansion plans.
