VIA'S CUTS STUN CANADA
Despite protest groups and outcries against the recent decision to reduce the number of VIA Rail's trains to one-half and its work force to one-third of its current number, Minister of Transport, Benoit Bouchard and his department are standing firm on their decision. These changes are to take place because VIA's budget is to be cut by $1.3 billion. A commission will be created to study passenger transportation needs of Canada while the House of Commons Standing Committee on Transport will hold public hearings on the cuts and prepare a report on its findings.
