TRANSIT SERVICE AT SHOPPING CENTERS

Winnipeg, Manitoba provides transit service to 3 regional shopping centers, two of which are considered in some detail in this paper. The main influence of transit was on the internal circulation system and the number of parking spaces to be provided. The planning for the centers, the modal split and the operational experience are described. It was found that providing extensive transit service on shopping center property has led to problems when buses utilize main aisles. The transit facility should be develped as close to an entrance as possible to minimize the walking distance from the bus to the shopping center. These and other conclusions from the study are noted.
