PROMOTING THE PROFESSION: THE ROLE OF STUDENT CHAPTERS
As ways are being sought to recruit young enineers into the transportation profession, interest is being shown in ITE student chapters. There are now 62 chartered chapters with a total membership of 1500. Annual reports from such chapters indicate that they are engaged in meaningful programs. Student chapters represent a valuable, yet untapped resource for promoting careers in transportation and traffic engineering. Career promotion activities that such chapters may promote are discussesd. The Student Chapter Award is an effective incentive for chapter programs. Characteristics shared by successful chapters are noted. Suggestions are listed that will halp realize the potential of these student chapters.
