DAY AND NIGHT HUSTLE HELPS I-40 PROJECT ALONG. ASPHALT RECYCLING AND RECLAIMING SPECIAL REPORT

The article describes how work around the clock, 6 days a week, has helped a milling, widening and resurfacing project on I-40 between Raleigh and Durham, North Carolina, and kept the project 18% ahead of schedule despite bad weather and soil problems. Details of the three project phases are described. Conditions caused by the original construction led to the need to find subgrade stabilization alternatives. The existing drainage system is being used with a few alterations for added lanes. Extra drainage structures are being added. Stage III of the project will start in April 1990. Concern for public safety led to the decision to do night work.
