RAP MILLINGS PROVIDE FOUR TIMES THE ROAD. ASPHALT RECYCLING AND RECLAIMING SPECIAL REPORT

The article describes how asphalt cold millings were used to reconstruct a small town street 4,600 ft long, when only 1,200 ft could have been rebuilt with the limited funds if done conventionally. The existing surface was asphalt and chips over bare dirt, with a few areas of aggregate base. Although no performance data was available, engineers believed the use of cold milled material was a practical alternative to conventional methods. Facts about its use were noted and discussed with the village board, and new specifications for placement of the material were developed. Two winters have now passed since the reconstruction of the street and no ruts, base failures or potholes have been recorded. It is noted, however, that much needs to be learned about the technical properties of reclaimed, cold-milled material, and the Illinois Department of Transportation is studying the project.
