TRANSPORTATION OF FRESH CHILLED PORT TO JAPAN: AIR FREIGHT VERSUS REFRIGERATED MARINE CONTAINER

Canadian exporters are encouraged by the prospect of developing a regular trade in fresh pork exports to Japan, but to access the Japanese market, they are faced with the challenge of designing a transportation system that economically delivers fresh chilled pork in a saleable form. This paper reports the results of a study which examined the logistical feasibility of exporting fresh chilled pork from Canada to Japan. It begins with a conceptual framework for evaluating modal choice for highly perishable shipments. The model is used subsequently to consider the logistical and economic feasibility of surface and air routes for the export of fresh chilled pork.
