The federal role in infrastructure building is indispensable, and is still being defined today. This article recognizes the contributions of members of Congress and appointed officials in the fight to halt the deterioration of the nation's infrastructure. The article consists of a series of captioned photographs of members of Congress who are currently involved in this fight; a summation of the remarks of Representative Lee Hamilton who addressed the Associated General Contractors of America chapter presidents and vice presidents in April 1989 on infrastructure; comments by Transportation Secretary Samuel K. Skinner on transportation strategy; comments by the Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for Installations, Robert A. Stone, on how critical infrastructure is to U.S. defense; Senator Mark Hatfield's comments regarding the U.S. infrastructure; and the comments of Lt. General Henry Hatch, Chief of Engineers, Army Corps of Engineers, on maintaining and revitalizing the Army's installations and facilities.
