FROM TRUCK MANUFACTURING PLANT TO MUNICIPAL SERVICE CENTER
In 1985 Kansas City, Missouri, was faced with the problem of developing service center facilities at an affordable cost. The problem was overcome by acquiring an existing facility (a shutdown truck manufacturing plant) and adapting it to meet its needs. Completed in the summer of 1988, the new Public Works Operations Center has improved operational efficiency and provided potential for growth, at a fraction of the cost of a new facility. This article discusses the property acquisition, space allocations, and cost effective renovation of the acquired facility.
