INFLUENTIAL MODE OF IMPERFECTION OF CARRYING CAPACITY OF STRUCTURES
The development is described of a relatively simple procedure to obtain the mode of imperfection that causes the maximum reduction in the carrying capacity of a discretized structure from that of the corresponding perfect structure. The problem is formulated as an optimization problem of the loading intensity with nonlinear equality constraints. The constraint equations consist of nonlinear equilibrium equations, the singularity of tangential stiffness matrix, and the norm of imperfections. This optimization problem can be transformed into solving a system of simultaneous nonlinear equations that is relatively easier to solve. The method has been applied successfully to plane and space truss examples.
