THE NATIONAL TRANSPORTATION POLICY: A MAP FROM NOW TO THE FUTURE

A critical need is indicated for a national transportation policy that addresses today's problems and deals with transportation needs into the year 2020. By 1990, a group of experts from government and the private sector, the National Transportation Policy Team, will develop a strategic policy to help make transportation more efficient, less expensive, and safer for the consumer. The team will consist of several major working groups that will zero-in on specific areas: urban/suburban services; rural transportation; intercity passenger transportation; intercity freight; international systems; and innovation and human factors. The questions that will be considered by the groups are noted. The transportation policy will also consider factors such as environmental impact, energy, and national security. This effort will require cooperation from every level of government, private sector, and the transportation user.
