TECHNICAL ACTIVITIES STANDARDS, AND LITERATURE ON RAILCAR LINING

Technical activities, standards, and literature on railcar linings come from 3 sources: the National Association of Corrosion Engineers (NACE), the Car Department Officers Association (CDOA), and the Steel Structures Painting Council (SSPC). This article describes the technical activities of these 3 organizations in the area of railcar linings, reviews recent literature and standards on the subject, and provides a bibliography of publications. NACE task groups are developing standards or recommended practices on coatings and linings for railcars. A handbook for surface preparation of railcars focuses on the problems of surface preparation unique to the railcar industry. Coatings under insulation, and visual standards are among the areas covered. An SSPC Committee acts as a forum for discussion of issues and for informal presentations on linings. A CDOA Committee operates a problem solving group. Papers and articles recently presented at the NACE Corrosion/89, JPCL and CDOA are reviewed.
